The Food and Agricultural Education Information System (FAEIS) is a voluntary system designed to collect data from institutions offering degrees in the areas of Agriculture, Forestry, Renewable Natural Resources, Human Sciences/Family and Consumer Sciences, Veterinary Medicine/Veterinary Science and related programs.
FAEIS reports are derived from self-reported data supplied by institutions. Numerous specific efforts are made to verify the information provided by the institutions. They include:
- At the data entry level, the survey forms flag any cell with a +/- 10% difference from the prior year’s data, showing those flagged cells to the data entry person.
- At the Help Desk level, FAEIS team members assist institutions by entering the data for the institutions; are persistent in contacting institutions who have yet to enter data; monitor data as received; regularly review student survey completion/status reports by institution; provide feedback to institutions as data is submitted. All Help Desk contacts are logged in a contacts database for documentation purposes. FAEIS personnel can quickly determine which member of the FAEIS Team each institution talked to and even what screen in FAEIS the discussion was about.
- Additional quality control mechanisms in place include internal reports used to scan for duplicate surveys and for outlier data. Internal reviews indicate that FAEIS data have less than 1% outliers. The FAEIS team contacts data entry users for clarification when suspect surveys are detected.
However, despite these types of checks, FAEIS cannot independently verify the accuracy of the data entered.
While there are a large number of institutions nationwide who offer degrees in these fields, the institutions reporting to FAEIS are generally members of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) and American Association of State Colleges of Agriculture and Renewal Resources (AASCARR). In addition, participating institutions may be members of a number of other organizations that sponsor FAEIS. However, FAEIS is continually working to expand the database to include other institutions in order to have the most complete set of national data for the disciplines in our program areas of interest.
FAEIS data can be downloaded into a number of formats including word processing, spreadsheets or PDF files. FAEIS is not responsible for the manipulation of data outside of the current system.
Confidentiality of information is important to FAEIS, specifically for student information which is collected by discipline, by ethnicity, and by gender. The confidentiality of faculty information is also important, and with legal implications regarding access. The Federal Education Right to Privacy Act (FERPA) guarantees that individual student’s rights are protected, so no data items for individuals will be shown by FAEIS. We have adopted the same philosophy for the faculty data.
We have also adhered to the standards set by College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR), which are that no salary data are reported for positions with fewer than four (4) incumbents.
